Privacy Policy

Luxel is a free, open-source desktop app for controlling LIFX smart bulbs and SmartLife (Tuya) smart plugs that runs on your own device. This policy explains what information Luxel handles, how it is used, and the choices you have. It applies to the Luxel desktop application and to this website, luxel.hyprlab.co. Luxel is developed by Hyprlab (“we,” “us”).

The short version

  • Luxel runs locally on your device and talks directly to your bulbs over your own network.
  • We operate no servers that receive, store, or process any of your data.
  • We collect zero telemetry — no analytics, tracking, or usage reporting.
  • There is no account to create with us; the LIFX Cloud and the one-time Tuya setup are strictly opt-in.
  • We do not sell, rent, or share your data with anyone.

Information Luxel accesses

To function as a light controller, Luxel works with information about your lights. Depending on how you use it, this may include:

  • Bulb state and identity — each bulb's label, group, network address, power state, color, brightness, and color temperature, read directly from the bulbs over your LAN so the app can display and control them.
  • Your configuration — the rooms you assign, the scenes you save, and any subnets you list for discovery. This is stored locally on your device.
  • An optional LIFX Cloud personal access token — only if you choose to enable cloud control. It is stored locally and used solely to talk to the LIFX Cloud API on your behalf.
  • SmartLife/Tuya device credentials — if you set up SmartLife plugs, each device's ID and local encryption key, plus the Tuya API credentials you enter in the setup wizard. All of it is stored locally and used solely to control your devices and to fetch their keys from the Tuya cloud when you run the wizard.

All of this stays on your device. The app communicates only with your bulbs and plugs on your local network and — if and only if you opt in — with the LIFX Cloud API and, during SmartLife setup, the Tuya cloud API.

How Luxel uses this information

Information is used solely to provide the app's features that you initiate — discovering bulbs, showing their live state, and applying the power, color, brightness, and scene changes you make. It is never used for advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to controlling your lights.

The LIFX Cloud (optional)

If you add a LIFX Cloud personal access token in Settings, Luxel uses it to list and control your lights through the LIFX Cloud API — useful when local discovery can't reach them. That traffic goes directly from your device to LIFX's servers; we never see it. The LIFX Cloud is operated by LiFi Labs, Inc., and its handling of your data is governed by LIFX's own privacy policy. You can remove the token at any time in Settings, and revoke it entirely from your LIFX Cloud account settings.

The Tuya cloud (SmartLife setup, optional)

Tuya encrypts local control of SmartLife devices with a per-device key that only the Tuya cloud can provide, so the setup wizard makes a one-time, opt-in connection to the Tuya cloud API using developer credentials you create yourself. That traffic goes directly from your device to Tuya's servers; we never see it. After setup, day-to-day control of your plugs is entirely local — Luxel does not contact the Tuya cloud again unless you re-run the wizard. The Tuya cloud is operated by Tuya Inc., and its handling of your data is governed by Tuya's own privacy policy.

How your data is stored

  • Rooms, scenes, and settings are stored locally in the app's configuration on your device.
  • The optional cloud token is stored locally on your device and sent only to the LIFX Cloud API.
  • SmartLife device keys and Tuya API credentials are stored locally on your device; the API credentials are sent only to the Tuya cloud API, and the device keys only to the devices themselves.
  • None of this data is transmitted to us or to any third party we control.

Sharing and disclosure

We do not receive your data, so we have nothing to sell or share. Luxel does not send your data to any third party. If you opt into cloud control, your requests naturally travel between your device and the LIFX Cloud, whose own privacy policy governs their handling of them.

Data retention and deletion

Because your data lives on your device, you are in control of it:

  • Delete a scene or room in Luxel to remove it from your device.
  • Remove the cloud token in Settings to stop all cloud communication.
  • Uninstalling Luxel removes its locally stored configuration.

Telemetry

Luxel collects no analytics, no usage statistics, and no crash telemetry. The app does not phone home.

Children’s privacy

Luxel is not directed to children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected here with a revised “Last updated” date.
